Students in the area who are enrolled in middle school and high school can take part in a soccer competition that is being organized by students from the University of Scranton as part of a course on sports event management. A portion of the proceeds from the second annual Scranton Soccer Fest, which will take place on Saturday, May 4, at Fitzpatrick Field on the campus of the University of Scranton, will be donated to the American Breast Cancer Foundation.
Participants can register to compete in the 6-on-6 tournament in the following age divisions: U12 male, U12 female, U14 coed, high school male, and high school female. Groups of around six to ten people are allowed to register. It is assured that each side will compete in a minimum of four games. All individuals, regardless of their degree of soccer expertise, are encouraged to take part. On May 4, the games will start at nine o’clock in the morning.
Participants will receive a t-shirt as part of the registration cost, which is $150 per team if signed up before April 15th. During the period of April 16 through April 28, the cost of registration is $165 per team, but this does not include a t-shirt. Members of the University’s sports event management course, which is being taught by Ovidiu Cocieru, Ph.D., assistant professor of management marketing and entrepreneurship, are the ones responsible for organizing the event.
Through participation in this project, students will have the opportunity to gain practical experience in organizing a sporting event that is centered on the community. The project involves all parts of the management of the event, including the organization of the play itself, as well as registration and distribution of marketing materials.
